UK workers supplying Jaguar Land Rover’s production lines have recently voted in favour of a strike that could well result of the closure of key assembly lines over the coming weeks. A pay row at plants in Castle Bromwich and Solihull has escalated to the extent that 1,000 employees voted to walkout. The incident occurred at a similar time to an episode involving an additional 800 Merseyside workers, who all took the decision to vote on industrial action.
These UK disputes may have caused some unwanted publicity for Jaguar, but on an international scale they have been overshadowed due to Jaguar increasingly becoming one of Britain’s most successful exporting industries. Huge demand for Jaguar cars in China, Russia and America has been instrumental to their success, with China alone having purchased 42,155 vehicles in the first six months of 2013. Such is the extent of the overseas growth that further manufacturing bases are also being planned in India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
Jaguar Land Rover employs in excess of 16,000 workers, including about 3,500 engineers that remain mainly UK based. The annual exports that are generated are thought to be approximately £11 billion. Nearly 80% of Land Rovers that area produced are exported to more than 160 countries, with 70% of Jaguars also finding their way to 63 countries. The widespread popularity of new models overseas has resulted in several long waiting lists, and before the current UK disputes the company had reported its intentions to take on 800 more workers for its Solihull factory to cope with the growing demand.
