Toughest 4x4s in the World! (Part 1)

4x4s are known to be tough vehicles and stand out above other vehicles on the road for being able to go where other vehicles can’t. Even in this brotherhood of tough vehicles though, there are certain cars that stand out above the rest as the elite. These vehicles set new standards for toughness and capability and are given legendary status among 4×4 and car lovers.

As devoted 4×4 fans and dedicated suppliers of spares for 4x4s such as Discovery parts and Defender parts we decided to pick out our 6 favourites in this special 2 part blog.

Willys Jeep

First on the list is truly one of the archetypes of off-road vehicles and it is a lesson in sheer capability. Designed as a light reconnaissance vehicle for the US military from 1941-1945, the Willys Jeep is a small and lightweight off-roader that helped to launch the idea of a useable four wheel drive vehicle.

It’s compact design and capability made it perfect for the military and it’s cute, back-to-basics appeal have ensured that it is still popular to this day!

Bowler

You will notice that we have not specified a vehicle for this, this is due to the fact that Bowler make nothing other than the toughest, most hardcore 4x4s that the world has ever seen. Built with races such as the Paris-Dakar in mind these vehicles aren’t for the faint of heart. In virtual tests, the Bowler was dropped from a 40ft drop onto its nose and nothing adverse happened, 10 ton weights on the roof caused no ill effects either.

The fact that these vehicles are also lightning fast means that there is no area in which they don’t appeal… unless you want tedium’s such as practicality or comfort.

Land Rover Defender

One of our absolute favourites here at CWS is the incredible Land Rover Defender which has existed pretty much unchanged since 1948. It is rare for something to be perfect first time out but the Defender just did everything that it needed to so perfectly that it is still as popular as ever despite its lack of changes.

With several iterations including pick-up trucks, vans, ambulances and many more, the Land Rover Defender is sure to be a feature of the toughest terrain for some time to come.

So there you have it, our first three options for the toughest 4x4s out there, stay tuned to our blog for part 2 in which we take a look at 3 more options for those that want something that survive just about anything.
