Tis the Season: Hospice Seeks 4×4 Volunteers

And so Christmas is almost upon us; the season of wintery greetings is literally a month away, and boy is it hurtling towards us fast. So what are you going to do this year? Picking up loved ones from the train station or the airport, filling up the back of your Landy with last-minute Christmas shopping and looking forward to going out on the work’s Christmas ‘do?

How about embracing the true spirit of Christmas, as written in a thousand warming Hollywood film scripts? This year St. Giles Hospice in Whittington are appealing for drivers and owners of 4x4s to volunteer their services this winter. The hospice, which cares for those with cancer and other serious illnesses, is attempting to get ahead of the game – because hey, just because it’s icy out doesn’t mean their work is done for the year.

But don’t worry, just because it’s a hospice doesn’t mean 4×4 drivers will be barrelling through snowy streets like 4×4 ambulances, leaning out and imitating a siren to clear the path. According to transport co-ordinator for St. Giles Hospice, Lindsey Walker, ‘As forecasters are predicting a hard winter this year, we need to make sure we are prepared. We need our staff to be able to get to work if the weather gets bad, whether that’s at one of our hospice facilities or the home of a patient or client within the local community – so we’re calling for people with 4×4 vehicles to sign up to be a volunteer driver, ferrying staff to work or clients’ homes in severe conditions. They’ll have the satisfaction of knowing they’re part of helping to keep our vital services going this winter, whatever the weather!’

Of course it’s not an entirely charitable exercise, with the hospice allowing drivers to recoup the cost of petrol for any journeys run for them. They’ll also pay for any relevant checks the vehicles may need. All drivers need, in addition to their 4x4s, is a clean driving licence and to contact Walker at St. Giles hospice.
