The evolution of the Land Rover Discovery

When buying a car there are thousands of combinations of abilities and uses that we require from the car that we eventually purchase. We always want to make sure that we are getting the most for our money, we want to maximise the usefulness of the car whilst minimising outlay. The Discovery is a car that absolutely epitomises the term useful, in terms of sheer abilities it is now and has been since its first generation one of the most complete cars that you can buy. Now in its fourth generation it is easy to track a detailed and customer focussed evolution with each generation.

Land Rover Discovery 1

Launched in 1989 the first generation was aimed at a far wider market than the more luxurious Range Rover, it aimed to be the ultimate practical car. Straight of the mark land rover had got the philosophy spot on and the series 1 was a car with excellent ability off-road abilities as well as the practicality to appeal to a very broad audience.

Land Rover Discovery 2

Launched in 1998 the series 2 was a thorough reworking of the series 1 and despite still looking similar had 720 differences to ensure that it was suitably developed from the first model. The differences had all come from customer suggestions that the vehicle should be more refined on the road and look a little less utilitarian. Major components like the suspension and engine were altered and changed to ensure that it remained one of the most incredibly useful vehicles on the road.

Land Rover Discovery 3

By the time it launched in 2004 the market for practical SUV’s was huge and rivals such as the BMW X5 had begun to steal sales from the Discovery. Land Rover needed the Discovery 3 to be a huge success and thankfully it was, regarded as a turning point for Land Rover and the SUV market as a whole the third generation car was an utter revelation. With all of its off-road ability retained and improved as well as a new luxury cabin with a 7 seat option and air suspension the Discovery 3 was the default choice for those that needed a car that was fit for every journey.

Land Rover Discovery 4

The fourth generation discovery is a largely revised version of the discovery that built on the good points of the previous car and sought to further broaden the cars appeal. With air suspension and seven seats now standard on all cars the Discovery is considered by most customers and indeed motoring publications to be the best 4×4 in its price range and has received several awards. With new revisions for 2014 that will see the car become more economical and more aesthetically pleasing it is sure to remain a firm favourite.
