As from October, 4×4 enthusiasts will be able to purchase what is quite simply the fastest and most powerful production car ever to be manufactured by Land Rover; the Range Rover Sport SVR. First teased some time ago, and previously featured here on our blog, the SVR has now been fully revealed in just the last few days, and it certainly looks to be an impressive vehicle, to say the least. As the global debut at Pebble Beach is now just a few days away (14th August), we thought that this extraordinary 4×4 warranted a second look.
According to Car Magazine, the new SVR boasts a supercharged 5 litre V8 engine, the same device that you might normally find powering a Jaguar XKR-S, and in keeping with the formidable specifications of Land Rover it also exhibits 543 bph and 502lb of torque. What’s more, Land Rover were not exaggerating when they claimed that the SVR was the quickest ever Range Rover. This thing is fast. Really fast.
The Nürburgring isn’t necessarily the sort of place you’d expect to find a Range Rover, but from what we’ve seen the SVR looks perfectly at home! Registering the fastest lap time of an SUV in history – a stunning 8 minutes and 14 seconds – the SVR looks more like a supercar than an off-roader, and indeed it’s only 10 seconds slower than an Audi R8 V8, and it compares well with other performance cars too.
As fast as the Mercedes C63 AMG, and leaving the pioneering Honda NSX and the Lexus IS-F in the dust, there’s little more to say about the speed of the SVR. But that’s not the only thing that has been improved. Gear shift times have been slashed, the body control of the SVR has been ramped up, and a variety of visual adjustments are also evident (including new aerodynamic bumper designs and bespoke sport seats). We gave you plenty of other specifications last time, but one thing is for sure, this is a Range Rover like no other.
4x4s have always been standout vehicles in terms of performance, and, in light of introductions like the new SVR, that fact only looks set to continue.
