Mitsubishi Planning New Version of the Lancer Evolution

Mitsubishi fans have been waiting for the 21st century version of the Lancer Evolution for some time now. Yet when it does make its appearance, it’s going to be a 500bhp hybrid, today’s Autocar exclusively reveals.

What with the Lancer hatchback being launched next year and a plug-in hybrid version already in the pipeline, Mitsubishi are debating the options for a petrol-electric performance car. We know that the new model will be borrowing technology from the inimitable MiEv Evolution II, putting it in a class by itself.

Although it’s largely dependent upon market acceptance of the new plug in hybrid PHEV technology, the Mi Ev’s performance at the Pikes Peak event has attracted a good deal of attention. Naturally many drivers would like to see the racer’s performance transferred to everyday life.

If realised, it will mean a high end sporting option with greater all wheel drive performance than any previous Lancer Evo. This, combined with low emissions and the possibility of all-electric running, will make it a potential rival to the Nissan GT-R. If the market warms to the latest model, the Lancer PHEV, there’s nothing to stop it from becoming a reality.

As North America executive vice-president of electric vehicle operations Masatoshi Hasegawa points out, there are still obstacles to be overcome before the PHEV cars reach their full sales potential.

“The USA’s domestic car makers are backing new fast charging hardware defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, while Nissan and ourselves have been using the Chademo standard. There needs to be agreement before everyone can benefit from the investment in infrastructure.”

We can’t wait to see this exciting new chapter in the Mitsubishi story, but until that time we’re here to keep your current Lancer running. As the UK’s leading breakers yard, we supply parts for all manners of Mitsubishi as well as Land Rover parts, Vauxhall parts, and Nissan parts, and many more. Whilst still a concept car, we hope to see it on our roads in the near future.
