Britain’s Best Driving Roads

Just because you own a 4×4, that doesn’t mean that you don’t want to enjoy a drive on a really good road. As we mentioned previously, the days are long gone when 4x4s used to be uncomfortable to drive, and now you can enjoy flying along a fantastic road in your off-roader just as much as you can relish a gritty adventure in the wilderness.

The fact is that you’ll probably spend more time on the road in your 4×4 than you will off it, but thankfully there is no shortage of great driving roads for you to enjoy in Britain. Here are a few of our favourites:

Wales

Motorway driving undoubtedly has its perks, but if you avoid the M5 and M6, and instead choose to traverse Wales by using the A470 instead, you certainly won’t regret it. There’s a lot of fantastic scenery to soak up, and a variety of twists and straight expanses of tarmac to really put your 4×4 through its paces. Who said driving on the road wasn’t fun?

Black Mountain Pass

Another highlight from Wales, this pass was famously endorsed by Jeremy Clarkson in a Top Gear road test, and is rightly famous for an abundance of stray sheep and hairpin bends. It runs for about 23 miles through the Brecon Beacons, and if you’re looking to test the on-road handling of your 4×4, you’ll find no better place.

The Evo Triangle

This unique driving route encompasses three lengths of road from the A5, A543 and B4501, and once again reinforces that Wales has a lot to offer driving enthusiasts! You can expect minimal traffic to bother you on this fairly technical road, and as it’s named after a performance car magazine (who hail the road as an ideal testing ground), you certainly won’t be disappointed with this road.

Snake Pass

Leaving Wales behind and heading into England, we find Snake Pass; a long and demanding road that winds through the tallest hills in the Peak District. The climb is steep and the bends are tight, but that should be exactly what you need to test your 4×4’s mettle. Be warned, traffic on Snake Pass can get pretty bad at peak times, so this might be one 4×4 road trip to make at a quieter hour!

Scotland

We finish in Scotland, and the famously picturesque roads across the highlands are an absolutely ideal place to come for a drive. The A87 is a good road to call upon, as it stretches for more than 100 miles, and the countryside is gloriously far-flung in nature, which makes this a perfect drive to unwind upon in the (relative) peace and quiet.

Of course, if you’re planning on putting your 4×4 through its paces, whether that means on-road or off-road driving, at some point you’ll need to make the odd judicious repair so your prized vehicle remains at the peak of its powers. Here at CWS 4×4 we specialise in 4×4 salvage, ensuring that you’ll always have access to all of the parts that you need to keep your 4×4 in tip-top shape.
