A Round-Up of the Latest 4x4s from the Geneva Motor Show

The Geneva Motor Show is one of the most important and influential Motor Shows of the year, and is one of the first opportunities for manufacturers to showcase the concepts that will inform their future production models. Amid the inevitable array of hugely elaborate (and clearly nowhere near production specification) models were three future 4x4s that really stood out for several reasons.

The Fiat Panda Cross

For many, the original Fiat Panda 4×4 is the archetypal small 4×4 that was remarkable not only for its compact dimensions, but also its surprising off-road ability. The current Panda 4×4 is very much in the same vein, and is a thoroughly likeable car that continues to match far more expensive vehicles when the going gets rough. This new Fiat panda Cross is based on a standard Panda 4×4, so retains the small dimensions, excellent mpg and practicality. The improvements come in the form of features such as increased ground clearance and torque-on-demand transmission, which can better distribute the power between the wheels in slippery situations. Aesthetic improvements also help the car to have a more off-road appeal, and are sure to make it a popular choice for those that require quirky functionality.

The Volkswagen T-Roc

Volkswagen never disappoints at motor shows, and this year was no different. Their T-Roc concept is a Polo sized 4×4 that looks incredibly radical. With only 3 doors and a targa roof, this concept is clearly in the early phases of development. The basis of the car will almost certainly come to production in the future with the edges reined in a little more. Expect to see a small VW 4×4 that sits under the Tiguan in the next few years. The actual production model will almost certainly have at least the option of 2 extra doors, and you can reasonably expect the targa roof to become an optional panoramic roof.

The Jeep Renegade

With models such as the Grand Cherokee gaining favourable reviews, it is fair to say that Jeep has gained much more of a following in Britain over the last few years. This new Jeep Renegade is set to continue this rise in popularity, and has the small 4×4 market firmly in its sights. With the most complex four wheel drive systems in its sector, it promises (and will undoubtedly deliver) exceptional off-road performance. Jeep’s main battle in recent years has been to match the refinement of European cars, and, with features such as dual-clutch gearboxes that provide seamless gear changes, the Renegade is sure to impress.

With the Motor Show calendar crammed again this year, there are sure to be several more concepts released throughout the year. The demand for 4x4s has seen continual increase in the last decade; leading to the question of ‘why’? The simple answer is that 4x4s are popular as they represent the most all-round capable vehicles on the market. They are inherently practical and capable, making them the perfect choice for the largest market sector, namely families.
