2014 has almost passed us by, and it’s been another great year in the 4×4 industry. The end of any year is always a great excuse to reminisce about the last 12 months, so in this latest feature we thought that we’d go all misty-eyed over some of our favourite 4x4s from 2014. Not all of them have strictly been released in the past year, but all of them have well and truly made their mark…
Dacia Duster
One of the most affordable 4×4 SUV vehicles on the market, the Dacia Duster is proven in terms of off-road capabilities and is pretty spacious for everyday life as well. Whilst it might lack the flair of some of its rivals, there’s no doubting the impact that this little 4×4 has had this year.
Land Rover Discovery 4
The time-honoured name of ‘Land Rover’ should never be far from any compilation of top 4x4s, and the Discovery 4 is a great case in point. A bit utilitarian compared to some SUVs, the Discovery 4 is nonetheless the optimal choice for off-road exploits, yet retains enough convenience to carry as many as seven passengers. Full of nice touches to make your life easier, this is a top 4×4 from 2014.
Mazda CX-5
Part of a new breed of family 4x4s, the Mazda CX-5 may not be our pick when it comes to off-road pedigree, but it’s definitely got the fuel economy and smooth-driving categories nailed. Few people want a 4×4 purely to conquer hills anymore, so this nifty Mazda certainly hits that spot.
Range Rover Sport
As you might expect from the name, the Range Rover Sport is a high-performance 4×4, but it balances this with a genuinely luxury feeling too. Although there’s not as much room in the back as there could have been, the ride is superb both on the road and off it, so this second-generation 4×4 SUV is not only a worthy successor to the first model, but is a great release from the past 12 months.
